How soon should I contact an attorney after an automobile collision?
One of my clients asked me when is the best time to get a lawyer after an automobile collision. Will it look bad if I get a lawyer right after the collision? I told my client that the insurance company for the at-fault driver is on the case right after the collision. They have lawyers available to consult with or bring in the case right after the collision. They are taking pictures, interviewing witnesses and collecting documents related to the collision right after it occurs. Consequently, I recommend that people injured in automobile collisions contact me or the lawyer of their choice as soon after the collision as possible. If the injured person is still hospitalized or otherwise unable to come in and meet with me, then I recommend that a trusted family member contact me. We can go to the hospital or to the injured person’s home to advise our client of his/her rights. We can get the necessary papers signed in the hospital or at the injured person’s home to begin our investigation and to preserve favorable evidence while the injured person is recovering. Time is of the essence if we are to preserve and protect valuable legal rights. And delay only benefits the insurance company for the at-fault driver.
